Playtomic has done something impressive. It built the largest padel booking network in Europe and gave millions of players a way to find courts and opponents. That's a genuine achievement, and credit where it's due.
But there's a problem — and if you've spent any time on padel forums, Reddit threads, or Trustpilot, you already know what it is. The rating system. Playtomic's player ratings are, to put it diplomatically, a source of ongoing frustration for a large portion of its user base.
Players report ratings that don't reflect their actual level. Beginners are placed too high after a questionnaire. Experienced players are stuck in brackets that don't move. Doubles partners drag each other's ratings in directions that feel arbitrary. And the whole thing is opaque — you win a match, your rating barely moves, and you have no idea why.
This isn't just anecdotal. Playtomic holds a 1.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot, with the rating system featuring prominently in complaints. Across the padel community, the same issues come up again and again.

The core problem: Elo wasn't designed for padel
To understand why Playtomic's ratings feel broken, you need to understand what's underneath them. Playtomic uses a variant of the Elo rating system — the algorithm originally designed for chess in the 1960s.
Elo is elegant. It works beautifully for what it was built for: ranking individuals in a pure 1v1 game where every match has a clear winner. Chess. Tennis singles. Competitive Scrabble.
Padel is none of those things.
Padel is a doubles sport. Two players share a side of the court, and the outcome depends on the combined performance of each pair. A player might execute flawlessly and still lose because their partner had an off day. Or they might win comfortably while contributing very little because their partner was dominant.
Elo has no mechanism for disentangling individual performance from team performance. When Playtomic applies an Elo variant to padel, it's forcing a 1v1 model onto a 2v2 sport. The result is predictable: ratings that reward or punish players for things outside their control.
What PADLR. uses instead
PADLR.'s rating engine is built on OpenSkill, a Bayesian team estimation algorithm. Unlike Elo, OpenSkill was designed from the ground up for team-based competition. It maintains a probability distribution for each player — not just a single number — which allows it to model uncertainty, team dynamics, and individual contribution simultaneously.
In practical terms, this means:
- Each player has a skill estimate (mu) and a confidence value (sigma)
- Your displayed rating is calculated conservatively: mu minus two standard deviations, mapped to a 0-7 scale
- The system accounts for the strength of both your partner and your opponents when calculating how much your rating should change
- Your rating reflects your skill, not your team's result
This is mathematically more sophisticated than Elo, and the difference shows up on court. Players converge to their true level faster, and the ratings feel fair.

Initial rating
Playtomic asks new players to self-assess through a questionnaire. You answer a few questions about your experience, and the system assigns a starting level. The problem is obvious: self-assessment is unreliable. Beginners overestimate. Modest players underestimate. The result is a starting bracket that often has no relationship to actual ability, and it takes dozens of matches to correct.
PADLR. lets you select a starting skill band during onboarding, but deliberately places you at the conservative end of that band. We'd rather you climb to your true level than start too high and drop. Your first 10-15 matches produce larger rating swings as the system rapidly calibrates, and confidence tightens with each game. The system finds your level — you don't have to guess it correctly on day one.
How ratings update after a match
Playtomic updates ratings based primarily on the match result — win or loss — with limited sensitivity to context. Community reports suggest the system rewards playing frequency over demonstrated skill improvement, and that rating changes can feel disconnected from what happened on court.
PADLR. considers three factors in every rating update:

The result relative to expectation. Beating a higher-rated team produces a bigger gain than beating a lower-rated team. Upsets carry more information, and the system responds accordingly.

The score margin. A 6-0, 6-0 win tells a different story than a 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 thriller. PADLR. factors in how convincingly you won or lost. A narrow defeat against strong opponents won't tank your rating. A dominant win over evenly-matched opponents will reward you appropriately.

Your confidence level. Early in your PADLR. career, the system is still learning about you, so matches produce larger swings. As it gains confidence, adjustments become more measured. This is why ratings stabilise naturally over time without becoming artificially sticky.
Additionally, PADLR. applies bidirectional streak amplification. If you're on a winning run, the system infers you may be underrated and accelerates the adjustment upward. Losing streaks trigger the same logic in reverse. This helps the system react faster to genuine form changes — returning from injury, breaking through to a new level, or hitting a rough patch.
Team handling in doubles
Playtomic treats doubles results as a flat win or loss for each player involved. If your partner plays poorly and you lose a match you individually dominated, your rating drops the same as theirs. Over time, this creates a persistent accuracy problem: ratings reflect who you've been paired with as much as how you've actually played.
This is one of the most common complaints in the padel community. Players describe being "trapped" at a level because they keep getting matched with inconsistent partners, or inflated because they regularly play with someone stronger.
PADLR. handles this differently at the algorithm level. Because OpenSkill models each player as an individual within a team context, it can account for the relative strength of your partner and your opponents. Carrying a weaker partner against a strong pair? The system recognises that. Being carried by a stronger partner? It recognises that too. Your rating adjusts based on what the result reveals about you, not just about your team.
Manipulation prevention
Playtomic allows self-reported match results with no opponent confirmation. This opens the door to rating inflation through fabricated matches or selective logging. Players have also reported that playing exclusively within closed friend groups can artificially inflate everyone's ratings, since the system has no mechanism to detect circular boosting.
PADLR. requires opponent confirmation for every match. When you log a result, the opposing team has a 48-hour window to confirm or dispute it. If they don't respond, the match auto-confirms — but the confirmation requirement means fabricated matches are blocked by default.
Beyond that, PADLR. runs backend manipulation detection that monitors for suspicious patterns: unusual win rates against specific opponents, statistically improbable score sequences, and other signals that indicate gaming rather than genuine play. The system is designed to be gamed by one thing only: playing well.
Transparency
Playtomic's rating changes are opaque. Players frequently report having no understanding of why their rating moved — or didn't move — after a match. When the logic is invisible, trust erodes. Every unexpected rating change feels like a bug, and there's no way to verify whether the system is working as intended.
PADLR. takes the opposite approach. After every match, you can see exactly what happened to your rating and why. The app shows the factors that influenced the change: opponent strength, score margin, confidence adjustment, and streak effects. We also display a confidence ring on your profile — a visual indicator of how certain the system is about your current rating. A wide ring means you're still calibrating. Convergence speed
Playtomic is widely reported to be slow to converge to a player's true skill level. Players describe spending weeks or months at ratings that don't reflect their ability, with the system seemingly weighting historical data too heavily and being reluctant to move players up or down decisively.
